The A-Z of Information about Palmerston
Welcome to Palmerston District Primary School. We have provided an A-Z of information to assist in a smooth transition to Palmerston Primary School. If you have any further questions, please call the front office on 02 6142 1440 and they will endeavor to assist you.
Targeted Student Support Team (TSST)
The TSST meet every Monday to discuss interventions and support for students. It is attended by the School Principal, Deputy Principals, DECO, Executive Staff and the School Psychologist. Teachers can refer students for additional support through our student focus processes.Telephone Calls
Telephone calls are sometimes made to inform Parents/Carers of interview times, a child's social or academic progress or illness. Parents/Carers may telephone the school at any time on 6142 1440, but should they wish to speak to an individual teacher, they need to make an appointment. It is usual for a teacher to return a call within 24-48 hours of receiving the message. If the message is urgent please notify the front office.
The office staff will take messages if telephone calls are made to the school at any other time. Please be mindful that before and after school and at some lunchtimes, teachers may have meetings or be on duty in the playground and will endeavour to return calls in a timely manner.

Toys
Children’s toys, unless specifically asked for by a teacher, should be kept at home. It is difficult sometimes for children to care for these properly at school and the chance of breakage is high. The definition of toys includes any electronic devices. The school does not take responsibility for lost or broken toys.
Transferring from the School
When students are moving interstate or transferring to another school in the ACT, please contact the Front Office and they will provide you with a 'Leavers Form' that will need to be filled out and returned for student transfer processing. Schools commence staffing for the following year in term 3 of each year. A message will be in the school newsletter in Term 3 asking for any information on potential student transfers. This information assists the school in staffing classes for the following year.
Travelling to School
There are a variety of transport options for children to commute to and from our school. Walking or riding is the preferred option, as it helps to reduce traffic congestion, increases safety and ensures children arrive invigorated and ready to learn.
The Transport Canberra website has a dedicated section for schools, which highlights some of the transport options available in the ACT. The site includes a range of resources and information about the initiatives being delivered to support active travel and traffic management around schools, including:
- Active travel toolkit
- Active Streets for Schools program
- Part way drop off and collection points
- Pick up and set down guidelines
- Ride or Walk to School program
- School Crossing Supervisor program
- Traffic management around schools
Encouraging children to walk or ride to school is one of the most time efficient ways for children to receive the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity every day. If you need to drive, please drive safely around the school and obey the road rules at all times.
Transport Network
The ACT Government integrated public transport network includes bus and light rail services operating together. Some students will use a single bus route while others may make bus connections or use light rail.
Tips on staying safe on light rail are available from https://www.canberra-metro.com.au/safety
If you need to drive to the school please follow Palmerston’s parking and traffic management guidelines, which are in place to ensure children remain safe.
